Entry Requirements and How to Apply

Entry requirements

MA/MSc

Candidates should normally have at least an upper second class honours degree in Sociology (or another relevant social science) from a British university or its equivalent. Professional qualifications and experience may be taken into account. In addition overseas applicants whose language is not English are expected to have an IELTS score of at least 6.5 (or equivalent) at the time of commencing their studies with us. Candidates for special entry will be required to submit examples of written work in order to demonstrate their aptitude for Masters level study.

Research Degree (PhD)

All applicants are expected to have a Master’s degree in a social science subject. Overseas applicants whose first language is not English are expected to have an IELTS score of at least 6.5 (or equivalent) at the time of commencing their studies with us.

All applicants are required to provide the names of two academic referees. Normally these referees should be from their most recent period of university study (undergraduate or Masters as appropriate).

Applicants who are unsure whether their qualifications qualify them for entry to our programmes are advised to contact the Postgraduate Secretary Nita Sudra.

Masters Application Process

Masters courses can be applied for either online or by post.

We very much welcome informal enquiries and are pleased to meet with prospective applicants to discuss the course and their interests.

PhD Admission Procedure

Applicants are expected to hold at least an upper second class honours degree in sociology or a related discipline. Application forms are available from the Department's Postgraduate Secretary at the address found on the left of this page. Alternatively you can apply online.

An informal visit

Prospective students are strongly encouraged to contact us informally to discuss their interests and are welcome to visit us personally in advance of an application.

Your interests and ours

You will be asked to provide a brief research proposal with your application to enable us to match your interests with those of one or more members of staff. Please click here for guidance on what is needed for a research proposal (doc).

Making an offer

You will then be invited to attend an interview where we will discuss your projected research and your likely supervisor(s) and you will have an opportunity to visit the Department and meet with current postgraduates. (This is not expected of overseas applicants).
