Research interests

My main research interest is in the relationship between gender and health. This research is both theoretical and empirical. Other interests include the social organisation of medical and nursing work, particularly as this concerns gender mainstreaming, health care management, consumerism, risk and trust. My most recent single authored book is Women's Health and Social Change (Routledge, 2009). I am currently preparing the second edition of The Sociology of Health and Medicine (Polity).

Supervision interests

I am able to supervise doctoral students across the wide range of research which falls under the umbrella of the sociology of health. My particular interest lies in health inequalities (e. g. gender, social class), reproduction and childbirth, gender mainstreaming in healthcare, the management of medical and nursing work, and risk, trust and litigation. My research is both empirical (qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods) and theoretical. (I have a particular interest in feminist theories.) I have undertaken research in a wide range of countries as well as comparative studies and would be pleased to supervise students undertaking work outside of the UK.
