About Sociology at Leicester

The Department's reputation for linking high quality teaching and research is well recognized and contributes to a rich learning environment. The Department is committed to academic excellence, intellectual diversity, good teaching and ensuring that the student experience is not only interesting and challenging in its own right but also provides a vital foundation for future employment.

The Department makes use of teaching methods that encourage independent learning in a supportive environment and in an atmosphere of mutual respect. We are an open and friendly Department and our degree programmes are designed to meet the needs of a very diverse group of students and to help them to develop their own interests and talents. We also run several exchange schemes with universities abroad.

Our undergraduates programmes are designed to provide students both with knowledge of the major perspectives and core areas in contemporary sociology and with sets of key skills – analytic, qualitative and quantitative – that can be applied in many different kinds of careers. Many of our students go on pursue highly successful careers in local and national organizations, in both the public and private sectors. Our graduates also have a good track record with regard to careers in academia and teaching.
