Frequently Asked Questions

Application procedure

Q: How do I apply for a place on one of the courses in the School of Psychology at Leicester?
A: You need to apply through UCAS through the on-line application procedure.

Q: Where can I get further information on your courses?
A:
If you would like a booklet on all the undergraduate courses then please contact us by one of the following methods, stating your own contact details and requirements:

  • Email: psyc-admissions@le.ac.uk
  • Telephone: +44 (0)116 229 7197
  • Fax: +44 (0)116 229 7196
  • Address: School of Psychology, University of Leicester, Lancaster Road, Leicester LE1 9HN

Points equivalence

Q: If you ask for (say) AAB and I get the same in points (e.g. A*AC), will this still be acceptable?
A:
Because of the high demand for places unfortunately we can't guarantee that the equivalence of points will be accepted. However, we do try to be as accommodating as possible when the results are known. So it is worth phoning us when you know your results. Also, we do show preferential interest for candidates who have made us their first choice because we know that they really want to come to us.

UCAS points tariff

Q: Are you making offers in terms of the new UCAS points tariff?
A:
At present we are continuing to make offers in terms of three A-level grades (or equivalent). However, additional A- and AS-levels will be taken into consideration when deciding (a) whether to make an offer and (b) whether to accept people who may not have quite made the specified grades when the results are published in August.

General Studies and other non-standard A-levels

Q: I am taking General Studies at A level.  Would you accept this as one of my three A level subjects?
A:
We do not have a requirement for particular A-levels, so a subject like General Studies at A-level would be perfectly acceptable.

AS-levels in place of A-levels

Q: I have 2 AS-levels.  Would you accept these in place of one A-level?
A:
Yes, we consider two A-levels and two AS-levels as long as the two AS levels are in different subjects from the A-levels.

A-level Psychology

Q: I don't have A level Psychology.  Does this mean that I can't apply for the course?
A:
Not at all.  Each year a proportion of our students do not have Psychology at A level. However, we think it would help if you did some background reading to find out a bit about Psychology before joining us at the end of September. If you know nothing about statistics, some preliminary reading would also be useful. Please see the next question for reading suggestions.

Preliminary reading before coming to study at Leicester

Q: I have been offered a place at Leicester and I wondered if you could suggest some preliminary reading, as I have virtually no background in psychology or statistics.
A:
If you have no background in Psychology you might read this book written by Professor Colman in our department:

Colman A. (1999). What is psychology? 3rd edition. Taylor and Francis.

There are plenty of introductory books in psychology in most bookshops. If you have no background in statistics we strongly recommend that you do some preliminary reading of an introductory statistics book such as: Gravetter, F.J., & Wallnau, L.B. (2008). Statistics for the behavioural sciences. 8th edition. Wadsworth Publishing Co Inc.

Second Year entry

Q: I'm not very happy with my first year course at my current university. Would it be possible to transfer directly into your second year?
A:
We do consider such applicants. However, this is subject to limited availability and first year modules must be strictly equivalent to our own and passed to a consistently high standard.

Mature students

Q: What is your policy concerning accepting mature students?
A:
We welcome mature students. However, please remember that it is important that you have GCSEs (or O-levels) in Maths or Statistics, and Biology or dual award Science including Biology.

Access to Higher Education Diploma

Q: Do you prefer particular Access Diploma courses?
A:
There are no specific Access Diploma courses that are preferred, and any subject combination at level 3 would be acceptable.

GCSE/O-level requirements

Q: Can I have GCSEs in any subject?
A:
Yes any subject would normally be satisfactory.  However, we also require you to have GCSEs (or O-levels) in Maths or Statistics, Biology or dual award Science including Biology, and English Language, at grades of at least C.

Fees and Finance

Q: Where can I get information on the level of fees for studying?
A:
Please view the Study with us site for information and advice on both the level of fees payable, and the funding help available for undergraduate students
