Participating in Research

The School of Psychology is often in need of volunteers to participate in research. This page provides information about these opportunities and includes an on-line form for signing up as a volunteer. If you sign up you may receive emails asking whether you would like to participate in specific projects.

If you are a student of the University, or if you live in or near Leicester, UK, you may also be able to participate in experiments at the University of Leicester. Some of our research is conducted on-line, and some is done through postal surveys, and you can take part in these wherever you are located. A few of our projects include small payments to cover participants' expenses and some also include cash rewards.

The experiments are interesting and fun, and participants are always given information about the purpose of the research and results. If you would like to volunteer, please fill in and submit the very short on-line form, and we will contact you when we need participants. The experiments listed below will give you an idea of what we are doing, and if you sign up as a volunteer you may be invited to participate in one or more of those projects or others that are not yet listed.

Current projects requiring attendance at the University of Leicester

How do we make decisions?

Researcher Poonam Gill from the Judgement and Decision making group is looking for unpaid volunteers to take part in a study that investigates investment decision making. The study involves playing a simple and fun game in which participants will be required to make a series of decisions. The session should take approximately 20-30 minutes. To find out more or to arrange to take part please email Ms Poonam Gill at: pg57@le.ac.uk.

Truth and lies about social deviance

Researchers Cara Laney, Melanie Takarangi and Antonella Bianca are seeking participants for a study on socially deviant acts and how people lie or tell the truth about what they have done. In this study, participants will be asked to complete a series of mildly socially deviant tasks, such as writing a curse word. The tasks will not be strenuous, though may be mildly embarrassing. Those with a very low tolerance for embarrassment are discouraged from participating. After the tasks, some participants will be asked to tell the truth about what they have done, while other participants will be asked to lie about their actions to a third party, at two different time points, approximately a week apart. The second session of the study will be conducted online. The first session will take approximately 30 minutes, and the second (online) part will take approximately 10 minutes. Participants will receive a £5 Amazon voucher for their time (alternatives arrangements can be made for non-Amazon customers).

All adults (aged between 18 and 60) are eligible to take part, but we would discourage people with a low tolerance for embarrassment from participating. If you meet this criteria and are interested in taking part please email: applcoglab@gmail.com.

Emotional memories and emotional beliefs

We are seeking participants for a study on emotional memories and emotional beliefs. The study involves the completion of a series of short questionnaires and also writing about emotional memories. The session should take approximately 50 minutes. Participants will receive £5 for their time.

Interested participants should be aged between 18 and 35 and be fluent in English. If you meet this criteria and would like to take part please email applcoglab@gmail.com.

Autobiographical memory and personality

We are seeking people to participate in a study about how autobiographical memories are affected by different personality types. You will need to attend three separate sessions spaced across eight days (e.g. Monday/Tuesday/Tuesday). All sessions will take place at the University of Leicester. Your total participation time will be about 1.25 hours. To participate in the study you must be fluent in English, and must not have studied psychology at second year level or above.  You will receive £10 for your participation.

If you are interested in taking part or have any further questions please email: applcoglab@gmail.com.

After answering a series of questions you will be asked to read through a fictional criminal trial and reach a verdict as a member of the jury. In total the online task should take approximately 20 minutes.
If you experience any difficulties completing the questionnaire, or have any questions or concerns about this research please contact Lisa Smith on ls149@le.ac.uk

Three months later participants will be invited to complete a follow up survey. Finally, six months after completing the original questionnaires they will be invited to complete a third short survey. The original questionnaires take around 20 minutes to complete in total. There are no right or wrong answers. Your responses are anonymous and confidential.
