This degree is designed to capitalise on the strong reputation of the department of Politics in the field of International Relations. Students will initially study both Politics and International Relations modules in the first year before undertaking more detailed modules in the second year dealing with ways of theorising about global politics and the current state of world politics. In the third year students write a dissertation on a specialist subject of their own choosing as well as completing specialist modules on subjects such as European defence or the politics of the Arab world.

The degree is taught through a mixture of lectures, seminar classes and individual consultations with members of staff. Assessment for each module takes place at the end of each semester on the basis of course work and competitive examinations.

During the course of the degree students will be equipped with a range of analytical and practical skills which will leave open the potential for careers in journalism, public administration and law. Additionaly, a degree in International Relations provides a good grounding for work in the expanding sector of International Organisations.

Entry Requirements for 2013

A/AS levels:

Three A levels usually required. Two AS levels considered in place of one A level. General Studies accepted. Key skills welcomed in addition and may be included in any offer. Equivalent Tariff points may be offered (320).

Other qualifications:

  • GCSE: No specific requirements.
  • Access to HE courses: Pass relevant diploma with some credits at distinction.
  • European Baccalaureate: Pass with 70% overall.
  • International Baccalaureate: Pass Diploma with 32 points minimum.
  • BTEC Nationals: Full Diploma DDM.

Interviews not normally required. All applicants receiving an offer will be invited to visit the Department.
