Introduction
I joined the department of Politics and International Relations in September 2008. During the period 2003-2008 I worked for the department of Sociology and between 1994 and 2003 I held a permanent lectureship in the university of Dundee (Scotland) where I taught European studies, Qualitative methods, Migration and Gender.
I have been appointed to the ISTAME thinktank as special advisor/expert on migration to the Greek government.
I have also been successful in obtaining funding with Khursheed Wadia from University of Warwick under the 2009-10 ESRC seminar series competition, for the organisation an ESRC funded seminar series on ‘Whose Security? Migration-(In) Security Dilemmas Ten Years After 9/11’. This will start in Feb 2011 and continue for two years.
Research Interests
Main Research areas: Ethnicity, Migration, Race and Racisms, Belonging and Identity/ies, Processes of Inclusion-Exclusion, Gender inequalities, Implementation of EU policies in Southern Europe.
I am interested in both theoretical development and policy impact.
I am a strong believer in the value of collaborative, comparative and interdisciplinary research.
Current Research
My current research interests revolve around international migration, multi-sited governance and policy making and policy implementation; non-governmental organisations participating in and having an influence on policy making processes in the area of migration within and across borders; national and transnational migrant networks interested in the promotion and advancement of the rights of migrants; how people on the move see their life trajectories and interpret their experiences in the host country and what matters to them.

- £120,380 (180,570 EURO) from the European Union (5th Framework) for research project on "Immigrants and Ethnic Minorities in European Cities: Life-courses and Quality of Life in a World of Limitations". Start date: 1st October 2002. The project included funding for a full time research assistant.
- £113,350 from the Leverhulme Trust for research project on "Social Exclusion of Albanian Migrants in Italy and Greece" (with University of Sussex). Start date: 1st April 2001. Duration: 2 years. The project included funding for two full time research assistants.
- £26,210 (39,316 ECU] under the Targeted Socio-economic Research Initiative (TSER) funded by the European Union, 1997 – 2000.Title of project: 'Self-employment of Women and Ethnic Minorities in Europe'. Co-ordinator of the project: University of Frankfurt-am-Main. The project included funding for a research student for 3 years part-time.
- £8,000 from the British Council for research collaboration on "Poverty Reduction amongst Elderly in the Palestinian Population" (with An-Najah National University). Coordinated by Alan Findlay, Dept. of Geography, University of Dundee. Start date: June 2001. Duration: 3 Years.
- 3,500 ECU under the DAPHNE initiative (EU) for studying ‘Trafficking of Women in Southern Europe’. January 1998 – December 1998.
PhD Supervision
I am keen to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students interested in ethnicity, migration, racism, citizenship, identity, gender, processes of inclusion-exclusion, multiculturalism, EU (especially policy implementation).
