Frequently Asked Questions

How is the course taught? Will I receive any materials in the post?

The course is delivered online through the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Blackboard. This requires regular internet access, but no prior technical experience. You will work on line with a dedicated Associate Tutor, and your fellow students to create a virtual learning community. We provide all of the materials required to complete the course through Blackboard (including access to electronic journals and books). Therefore there are no materials that would be sent through the post, thus enabling you to move around freely during the course of your studies.

Do I need regular access to the internet?

Yes regular access to the internet is required for the course.

Will I be required to attend the University of Leicester campus, seminars or exams?

No, the course is delivered solely online and assessment is 100% coursework. Therefore there is no requirement to attend campus for classes, residentials or examinations. However, should you wish to visit the University we would of course be pleased to see you.

How long is the course? Can you complete it sooner?

The course is designed to be delivered over two years; it is not possible to complete the course within a shorter timeframe.

What if I need longer for my studies or need to take a break?

The course is designed to be delivered over two years; however should your circumstances prevent you from completing in that timeframe there are systems in place to cater for such occurrences. The university does allow you to take a break from your studies.

I have an Undergraduate Degree in a different subject to International Relations, is it still possible to apply?

Yes, we welcome those with enthusiasm and a dedication to postgraduate study in the discipline of International Relations. Your academic background will be taken into consideration but it is not absolutely necessary to have a first degree in International Relations or a related field. Whatever your academic background your application will be dealt with on its merits.

I do not have an Undergraduate Degree, is it still possible for me to apply?

While an undergraduate degree is often a precursor to postgraduate study, we will also consider candidates with professional qualifications and relevant work experience.

Are the degrees accredited?

Your Master degree in International Relations is accredited from the University of Leicester; a nationally and internationally recognised centre of academic excellence.

How will the University support me through my distance learning studies?

We have a committed Distance Learning team in the department. You will also have support from a dedicated Associate Tutor for each of the modules you study, and you will also find that your fellow students are a good source of support through the online forums. Furthermore you will also be part of a wider university community and as such have full access to the University Library and the Student Support and Development Service.

How many hours a week will I need to dedicate to my studies?

This will vary to a degree depending upon where you are in your studies, but we recommend dedicating 12-15 hours per week for your studies.

When do the courses begin and when should I apply?

We have two intakes per year commencing at the beginning of September and March. Our application deadlines are usually one month prior to the start date, however we accept applications throughout the year and recommend that applicants apply as early as possible.

How much does the course cost and when do I have to pay fees?

For those starting in the academic year 2012/2013, the cost of the complete programme is £6545 (GBP). This can be paid as one lump sum, two annual installments, or a series of six installments spread over the two years of the course.
