Research Interests: Solar-Terrestrial Coupling: The role of magnetic reconnection in the substorm cycle.
Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental physical process by which magnetic energy is converted to kinetic energy. It also allows the transfer of mass, momentum and energy between plasma regimes which would otherwise be segregated because of their differing internal magnetic fields. As such, magnetic reconnection plays a major role in the interaction between the solar wind and the Earth's magnetosphere, mediating the energy budget of the near-Earth environment and resulting in approximately 1 teraWatt being deposited in the upper atmosphere. My research focuses on the role of reconnection in Solar-Terrestrial coupling, using a wide-ranging suite of ground- and space-based instrumentation, including the SuperDARN radar network and auroral imagers.
