How will I fund my studies?

The Department is able to provide a limited amount of funding for students, however, we always welcome students who are self-funded or come with international scholarships.

Current Funding Opportunities for UK Students

Research Council Studentships

For entry in October 2013, the Department will be able to offer 8 STFC, NERC or ESPRC studentships.

In addition, there is occasionally limited funding from the Research Groups themselves, for more information and current opportunities please refer to the Research Group pages.

Current Funding Opportunities for EU Students

Research Council Studentships

For entry in October 2013, the Department will be able to offer 8 STFC, NERC or ESPRC studentships. However, this is only applicable to EU students who have been resident in the UK for 3 years.

The Department is also able to offer individual studentships through a range of one-off grants, Department and industry funding on an occasional basis. Students may also apply for UK Research Council grants but are eligible for tuition fees only (see Applications section).

Current Funding Opportunities for International Students

Currently we have no positions offering funding for International Students.

Alternative Funding

Occasionally, if the applicant can partially fund their studies, the Department maybe able to source other means of funding the remainder. Please contact the Postgraduate Admissions Tutor (Contact Us) for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I supplement my income?

If you are a full-time student, you wil be expected to work around 35 hours per week on your PhD. Students are allowed to perform up to six hours of paid work per week. Typically, students assist with undergraduate teaching.
