Not for the likes of you

An access and inclusion resource for practitioners in museums and galleries

In 2001 RCMG were commissioned by Arts Council England in partnership with the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA), English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund, to undertake a research audit to advise cultural organisations on how to develop more inclusive messages and thereby broaden their audiences.

Not for the Likes of You took place at a time of growing awareness of the multiple barriers that exist to exclude different audiences from participating in and enjoying cultural activity. These may be physical, intellectual, cultural, emotional, or financial. The audit was based on the belief that organisations must adopt a holistic approach to identifying why certain communities are under-represented in their visiting profiles and develop proactive and informed approaches to become more inclusive. It also looked at the messages, direct and indirect, which are broadcast by cultural organisations and which may also create barriers, including promotional material, buildings design, signage and interpretation, programming, pricing polices and staff.

Mindful Museum

In conversation with Dr Robert Janes, author of Museums in a Troubled World and Museums and the Paradox of Change, this session focused on ideas of the Mindful Museum: a museum that purposefully responds to events in the outside world, above and beyond internal concerns.

Evidencing the Impact of the Generic Learning Outcomes (GLOs)

Between 2001-2004, the Learning Impact Research Project (LIRP) led to the development of the Generic Learning Outcomes (GLOs) by RCMG as part of MLA's (the former Museum, Library and Archive Council) vision for the sector to put learning at the heart of museums, libraries and archives. This report, written by Jo Graham of Learning Unlimited, provides compelling evidence of the awareness, use and impact of the GLOs on the museum sector in the UK.
