Welcome to RCMG

The Research Centre for Museums and Galleries (RCMG), part of the University of Leicester’s School of Museum Studies, embodies and articulates research which brings theoretical and empirical rigour to cultural questions concerning the contemporary, historic and future museum.

seeing things differently at Colchester Museums

The vision for RCMG is to continue to carry out research that can inform and enrich creative museum thinking, policy and practice. In the next 10 years we will further develop our collaborative practice and continue to extend our partnerships internationally to support museums to become more dynamic, socially purposeful institutions.

All RCMG research reports and publications are available to download for free, either from Projects or Publications.

RCMG was established in 1999 in response to the growing need for research and evaluation within the museum sector, in particular around the relationship between museums, galleries and their audiences.  We undertake commissioned research and evaluations, and we have our own independent research agenda. These complement, reinforce and enhance each other.

Evidencing the Impact of the Generic Learning Outcomes (GLOs)

Between 2001-2004, the Learning Impact Research Project (LIRP) led to the development of the Generic Learning Outcomes (GLOs) by RCMG as part of MLA's (the former Museum, Library and Archive Council) vision for the sector to put learning at the heart of museums, libraries and archives. This report, written by Jo Graham of Learning Unlimited, provides compelling evidence of the awareness, use and impact of the GLOs on the museum sector in the UK.
