Museum Studies at Leicester

The School of Museum Studies is a world-leading hub for research, teaching, thinking, debate and practice.

The School thrives as a result of its partnership working. Established by museum practitioners in 1966, its mission continues to focus on working with museums, galleries and related cultural organisations to develop new insights in the field and to foster creative practitioners equipped with the wide-ranging skills and knowledge necessary to make ongoing  contributions to the cultural sector internationally.

Defined by its rich interdisciplinarity, the School seeks to extend and enrich participation in museum studies research and practice through collaborations between academics, practitioners and students from wide ranging organisations and disciplines and in many different parts of the world. Through these collaborations we develop leading edge research and teaching which aims to shape the field of museum studies, inform practice in the sector and directly benefit contemporary society.

The School has made a significant and sustained contribution to the international cultural sector and the field of museum studies through:

  • Training creative and critical professionals who have transformed organisations and professional practice throughout the world - see Postgraduate Study for more.
  • Producing original, rigorous and internationally influential research - see Research for more.
  • Working collaboratively on a range of pioneering initiatives - see Research Centre for Museums and Galleries (RCMG) for more.

You may study with us either on campus here in Leicester or by distance learning. Check our individual programmes under Postgraduate Study.
