Italian Language, Three and Four

The aim of the course is to enable students, with a proficiency in Italian near or equivalent to A-level, to enhance their reading and writing skills and develop their ability to speak and write fluently in Italian.

Italian Language Advanced, Three and Four

Module Definition: 10 credits per semester, Semester One and Two

Through written, audiovisual and oral classes, this module is intended for second-year students who arrived at the University with an A-Level (or equivalent) in Italian. This module will enhance skills developed year one and in the Italian Summer Programme.

European Texts in Translation One and Two

Module Definition: 10 credits per semester, Semester One and Two

Module Leader: Dr Marina Spunta (Semester 1), Dr Ann Miller (Semester Two)

This course will introduce students to some of the key texts of European literature and will promote discussion of their thematic and stylistic features, and of what we can learn from them in their historical and social context. Consideration will also be given to questions posed by the different versions of the texts that have appeared in English translation.

Italian Linguistics

Module Definition: 20 credits, Semester One

In this module we will study the elements of Italian linguistics and consider the varieties of the Italian language. We will apply linguistic theory to analyze different aspects of the language and a variety of texts in Italian.

History & culture in Twentieth Century Italian Literature

Module Definition: 20 credits, Semester One

Module Coordinator/Tutor: Professor Sharon Wood

Through a mixture of literature and film, this course spotlights some of the major political and cultural transformations of Twentieth Century Italy. Beginning with the Avantgarde cultural movement of Futurism and the twenty years of Mussolini’s Fascism, we move on to examine the fate of Italy, and of Italian Jews, during the war and Holocaust, and finally consider the way Italy has been changed by shifting patterns of emigration and immigration.

Teaching English as a Second Language (Joint Honours Only)

Module Definition: 20 credits, Semester One

This 10-week course was first set up to meet the needs of Leicester University Modern Language students, in order to prepare them for working abroad as language assistants.  It has therefore been designed as an introduction to current language teaching methodology and is equally suitable for students who are about to embark on teaching either English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) or other modern languages.

History of Italian Cinema

Module Definition: 20 credits, Semester Two

Tutors: Dr Kate Litherland

This module studies Italy’s leading directors and cinematic productions, from the silent era to the present, examining their social and historical context.

Dante: Inferno

Module Definition: 20 credits, Semester One                              

Students will examine the development of aspects of Italian literature, history and culture, with emphasis on the late medieval and early renaissance era. Dante Alighieri’s masterpieces, Vita nuova and Inferno, will serve as the focal points for the module.
