Research Summary
Dr Staniland has recently completed her PhD thesis, entitled 'Towards Agency: Dialectic Bildung in Late Twentieth-Century Spanish American Women's Writing' (May 2010). This study considers the critical representation of three inter-related stages of gendered identity development in works by Isabel Allende, Laura Esquivel, Cristina Peri Rossi, Sylvia Molloy, Ángeles Mastretta and Zoé Valdés. Broadly, this study argued that a gradual progression towards selfhood takes place across the novels considered here, and that it is one characterised by a threefold movement towards self-knowing and, consequently, social agency. Dr Staniland is now looking to develop this project as a monograph, whilst developing other research areas in comparative American literature.
