Summer 2009 - Students rate Spanish at Leicester best in the country! 

The Spanish department at the University has been rated first in the prestigious 2009 National Student Survey! This clearly demonstrates how the commitment shown by Spanish departmental staff translates into a first-rate learning experience for our students

September 2007 - Prestigious National Body Finds New Home at University of Leicester 

The Association for Language Learning (ALL) - a major association for people involved in teaching all foreign languages - has recently moved to the University of Leicester. The Association for Language Learning works through a range of national advisory committees to support teachers, to develop, promote and encourage the teaching of foreign languages in the UK and to spread an understanding of the importance of linguistic diversity. The association currently has over 5,000 members from all sectors of education, offering them the chance to meet through its nationwide network of branches and at national and regional events.   Members are regularly consulted on national issues and their views are passed to government agencies, including the Department for Children Schools and Families.

This is an exciting move which will provide opportunities for academic and administrative collaboration with the School of Modern Languages, where the Association is now based. See the press release.

September 2006 - Free Catalan language and culture course 

The School of Modern Languages in collaboration with the Institut Ramon Llull in Barcelona is offering a Catalan intensive course in November.  

July 2006 - Research Grant Success

Dr Rabah Aissaoui has just been awarded a substantial grant from the AHRC to work on his project, The Politics of Identity and Migration:
Maghrebi Migrants' Political Discourse in colonial and postcolonial France.
