Spanish
Spanish is the third most widely used language in the world, with over 300 million speakers in 23 different countries. It is the second language of the USA, with one of seven Americans a Spanish speaker and a huge Spanish-speaking community in New York. It is heard all over South America. Some of Europe's most famous literary classics are written in Spanish, and today it is the medium used in the acclaimed new wave of films from Spain and Latin America.
Beginners
Course Level
This is for learners with little or no prior knowledge of Spanish or for those who are happy to start all over again. You will learn basic skills to enable you to make yourself understood and to find out information in everyday situations.
Course Content
Topics covered at this level will include the following: exchanging personal information, describing one's family and friends, describing daily routines, discussing hobbies and things you like to do in your free time, simple shopping transactions (at the bar, restaurant and supermarket), dealing with time (i.e. telling the time, understanding timetables, making travel plans) and space (describing one's house, asking for and understanding simple directions), applying for a job.
Post-beginners
Course Level
Is for those who can already manage in everyday situations using the present tense. You will probably have reached level A1 in the European Language Portfolio or completed a beginners course.
Course Content
Topics covered at this level will include the following: talking about the past (personal biographies, CVs, childhood memories, past habits & routines etc), discussing what happened (e.g. health, accidents & mishaps), how to give & follow instructions (e.g. following a recipe, rules & regulations), giving advice & guidance, applying for jobs, describing personal qualities, making excuses and apologising.
Intermediate
Course Level
These learners will have some knowledge of past and future tenses. Your level in the European Language Portfolio will be around A2/B1 or the equivalent to a good grade GCSE.
Course Content
Topics covered at this level will include the following: using the range of past structures (e.g. understanding and responding to news reports, short written texts in the past & more complex narratives), comparing and contrasting professional roles, exploring different personality types & stereotypes of different nationalities, talking about the future, making hypotheses, expressing and understanding opinions on a variety of contemporary topics, developing fluency and grammatical accuracy.
Advanced
Course Level
Is for learners who can understand the main points of everyday spoken and written material and are quite confident in the past and future tenses.
Course Content
Topics covered at this level will include the following: exchanging and expressing more complex and articulated opinions on a variety of contemporary topics, improving fluency and grammatical accuracy.
