Courses
We offer classes in the following languages:
Languages at Leicester courses are open to everybody and are designed for people who are not specialist linguists; you do not need to have studied a language before.
Our classes aim to enable you to communicate effectively in the target language, and practical language skills are emphasised. To find out more about course content and to check what level you should enrol for, see our level descriptions.
Why Study a Language?
To boost your career prospects
Whether a student or in employment, you are probably thinking about your future career. Knowing an additional language adds a new element to the skills you can offer a future employer. Not only does learning a different language give you the capacity to communicate in another language, but you’ll also get an insight into another culture – an educational and interesting experience.
To enhance your transferable skills
Studying another language can also help you to enhance your transferable skills, from interpreting, summarising and presenting information, to better time management, improved independent learning, thinking and conceptualisation abilities.
To meet new friends and share experiences
Joining a Languages at Leicester class also gives you the opportunity to meet not only students and staff at the University but also many other learners of different ages and backgrounds and to share experiences with them. What’s more, your language skills will help you make the most of travel opportunities, by helping you to find your way around and to get to know people.
And finally – providing that you complete two terms satisfactorily, you’ll receive a certificate of proficiency from the University of Leicester – another asset for your CV!
What will I be expected to do?
As well as attending one 2 hour class per week, you are advised to study independently – which may involve completing occasional written work – between classes. About an hour per week should be allocated for this.
You may take short tests at the end of the course and, on satisfactory completion, you will receive a Certificate of Proficiency.
