We are pleased to announce that the College is now able to provide funding for tea, coffee and biscuits to support initiatives such as reading/ discussion groups or groups where students present their work to each other, where these are organized on the students' initiative. This is in order that we support activities which are ongoing in some departments and Schools (Economics, Education and Management), and encourage other initiatives of this kind.

In order to apply for support of this kind, please email Jo Brewis, College PGR director, at j.brewis@le.ac.uk. She will need the following information:

1. The timetable of activities (dates, rooms, times)

2. A brief outline of the event(/s)

3. A maximum headcount for each event

4. A lead student name as organizer for the event/s and their departmental/ School affiliation

You will also need to copy in a faculty member from your department or School – perhaps the Postgraduate Tutor/ Director of PhD programme – to verify that these events have been discussed with a member of academic staff.

The upper limit on each event is 30 people, and the maximum frequency is weekly. These can be single discipline or cross-discipline, but the important thing is that all events are organized by research students within the College for other students (who may come from beyond the College).

Jo needs to have the information in good time, and no later than a fortnight in advance of the first event, in order that she can manage the necessary paperwork and book the refreshments.

Academics, including Dr Leah Bassel from the Department of Sociology, will share their experience of creating impact from Leicester’s research at an event on 28 February, organised as part of Research Focus Week.

During the morning session, four academics will speak. Their research interests represent a broad range of disciplines from the University’s four Colleges but their findings are all making a difference to the wider world, outside of academia.

Impact Day is on Thursday, February 28, and is part of a week-long series of events focussing on research at Leicester. The day begins with “Making a Difference: Impact from Leicester’s Research”, which takes place from 10am to noon in the David Wilson Library First Floor Library Seminar Room and is open to all staff and post-graduate students.

· Dr Rebecca Madgin, from Historical Studies (AHL), will discuss how her work on built heritage has impacted on town planning and heritage preservation.

· Dr Simon Kilvington, from Infection, Immunity and Inflammation (MBSP), will explain how his research into amoebal eye disease has improved diagnosis, prevention and treatment.

· Prof Sue Page, from Geography (S&E), will explain how her work on CO₂ emissions from Indonesia has helped a range of global organisations fighting climate change.

· Dr Leah Bassel, from Sociology (SS), will describe how her research into the English riots of 2011 is informing UK journalism practice and her work on multiculturalism is improving understanding among young people.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions from the presenters and the University’s Research Impact Development Manager will be available for questions on Impact and the REF, Pathways to Impact and the broader impact agenda.

The impact theme continues in the afternoon with “Ways to Impact: Collaborative Research and Funding”, which takes place from 2pm to 4pm in the David Wilson Library Ground Floor Leicester Mercury Suite.

During this session, the University’s Knowledge Transfer Manager, Dr Natalie Cozier from the Enterprise and Business Development office, will provide a sneak preview of the Enterprise and Business Development office Funding Bulletin. Four academics from each of the University’s Colleges will also share their experience of creating impact through collaborative research, accessing knowledge exchange, commercialisation and other funding pots for engagement with industry and external organisations.

· Dr Rebecca Madgin, from Historical Studies (AHL)

· Professor Mark Carr, from Biochemistry (MBSP)

· to be confirmed (S&E)

· Dr Will Green, from Management (SS)

The Funding Bulletins provide a round-up of key calls and funding opportunities for researchers seeking to work with industry and other external organisations, as well as highlighting key contacts within the Enterprise and Business Development office who can provide expert advice and support.

Please register for either event in advance of attending.

Research Focus Week is organised by the University’s Research Support Office, runs from 25th February – 4th March and includes a wide variety of events, covering topics such as research funding and project finances. A full timetable of events is available.

New University of Leicester project examines the familiar from a new perspective

Inspired by a popular BBC Radio 4 series, an innovative project that provides a social science perspective to everyday objects will be launched by the University of Leicester on 18th February 2013.

The project will showcase a broad range of research across all eight of the University’s College of Social Science Departments and will be hosted on public platform, Leicester Exchanges.

Academics from the College of Social Science will submit four articles on Leicester Exchanges in February, followed by one article per week thereafter.

The articles will discuss the academic’s specialist research and offer unique perspectives on objects in and out of the home. Each piece will be approximately five-hundred words in length and could change the way everyday objects are perceived.
