Course Conference

An annual four-day course conference is held in May at the University and is open to all students. The conference offers a series of lectures, and seminars presented by guest speakers and academics from the department.

There are opportunities for face-to-face tuition with your Personal Tutor, and to make extensive use of the Main Library facilities. Advice on how best to use the library services available for distance learning students is also available.

The conference is a good opportunity to meet and interact with the academics, student alumni and colleagues from the course. Attendance at the conference is not compulsory but many students have enjoyed the experience of life on campus and have found their encounters with staff and fellow students highly motivating.

What our Students Say

Distance Learning Students Meet

"Having just started the course, I benefited from getting to know the city, the University, fellow students and, above all the lecturers and my tutor. The conference gave me clearer idea what to expect of the course."

"It was greet to meet and share experiences with many of my fellow students; to meet face-to-face with my tutor and freely discuss issues. I felt a reassurance that many feel the same pressures and experience the same difficulties as I do."

"Well organised, professional, highly relevant topics for discussion. I found it very helpful and motivating."

"The conference was well organised with good lectures and it was fantastic to meet everyone and find out about their interests. It helped to focus my ideas for my dissertation and renew my enthusiasm for studying!"

Course Conference 2012: Thursday 10th to Sunday 13th May 2012.

What is distance learning?

Whereas traditional campus-based study requires students to live in, or travel to, Leicester, students on distance learning (DL) courses study at home from anywhere in the world. Your learning materials are sent to you through the post and accessed online.

Distance learning with the Department of Media and Communication means studying in your own time and at your own pace, so you can combine achieving a qualification with work or family commitments. At the end of the course you will have a fully recognised degree, just the same as those awarded to students on campus.
