Spend a Year Abroad

We offer a number of degrees which give you the option of spending a year at an overseas university. Local Education Authority (LEA) grants are extended to UK Home students to take account of the additional expenses involved. The academic objectives of these degrees are really no different from those of the standard degrees upon which they are based; however they offer you the opportunity to live and work abroad, to become more flexible and independent.
BSc (Europe) degree options
The BSc (Europe) four-year degree operates under the ERASMUS programme of the European Union.
The University of Leicester has ERASMUS exchange programmes with the following European universities:
- Technical University of Denmark, and the Engineering Institute of Denmark, both in Copenhagen, Denmark
- INSA Toulouse, in France
- University of Hamburg, and the University of Göttingen in Germany
- National Technical University of Athens, in Greece
You spend your first two years in Leicester taking the modules for a BSc in your chosen subject. Your third year will be spent at your chosen ERASMUS exchange host university and in your final year you will return to Leicester to take the normal final year BSc modules. Degree classification is based on performance in years two, three, and four.
- There are no formal language requirements, although optional courses allow you to improve your language skills before you go abroad.
The extra year required for a BSc (Europe) means that students who obtain this degree will often know substantially more than students taking a normal three year degree. In addition, BSc (Europe) graduates should be better prepared to apply for jobs in European countries other than the UK.
BSc and MMath Mathematics (USA) degree options
The USA degree programme is based on student exchange agreements between the Department of Mathematics at the University of Leicester and individual universities in the USA. We have a standing agreement with:
- the University of Miami (Coral Gables, Florida)
- the State University of New York, (Buffalo, New York)
- Agreements are occasionally reached with other institutions
Spend a year in the USA without adding a year to your degree
If you study for a USA degree you replace your second year in Leicester with a second year in the USA. You will take equivalent modules chosen from a list approved by the Department as providing adequate preparation for the continuation of your studies when you return to Leicester. You may also study non-mathematical modules where these are available. Modules taken in the USA count towards your final degree classification.
The number of places available on the USA exchange scheme is small. These places are allocated on the basis of performance in the examinations in the first year in Leicester. The USA degree gives you the opportunity to spend a year abroad without having to extend the time it takes to get a degree and without the need to learn a second language.
