Biography

Hendrik studied sociology at Bielefeld University in Germany, where he later served as a research and teaching assistant, finished his PhD and post-doc, became senior lecturer in sociology and senior editor of ZfS, a leading journal of the discipline. His post-doctoral research investigated the impact of disruption and disaster and was awarded by the University Society of Westphalia and Lippe. Over the years, Hendrik has developed a strong interest in understanding the role of accounting and calculative practices in organisations and society. He is a member of the editorial board of Accounting, Organizations and Society.

Research Interests

Investigating accounting in its social and organisational contexts, how accounting is involved in organisational change and how it transforms everyday organisational practice are broader themes of Hendrik’s research. With respect to the social and institutional settings of accounting, he is particularly interested in how organisation members and stakeholders converge on specific accounts and how accounting professionals team up with others in establishing jurisdiction on organisational and social problems. He also continues to be committed to investigating the impact of disruptions small and large on organisational and social order and believes that the areas of accounting and finance offer numerous cases in point. More generally, Hendrik is invested into the emerging fields of social studies of finance and the sociology of valuation.

PhD Supervision

I am interested in supervising projects exploring the social aspects of accounting and its embedding into organisational and institutional contexts concerning (but not limited to):

  • micro-processes of organising (e.g., work, decision-making, interaction, collaboration)
  • interfaces between accounting and other forms of organisational practice (e.g., risk management, HR, industrial safety)
  • between organisations and their environments (e.g., markets, stakeholders, professions, states)
  • institutional aspects more broadly considered (e.g., issues of professionalization, regulatory discourses, social and economic policies).
