Professor Gibson Burrell is about to release a ground breaking new approach to the study of organizations, in his book ‘Styles of Organizing – The Will to Form’.

The book aims to illuminate organization theory by discussing its interrelationship with key features of economics, architecture, design of the built environment and associated artwork. Professor Gibson Burrell suggests that these key areas of social science and the humanities are struggling with the same issue – ‘the will to form’.

Gibson Burrell, Professor of Organization Theory here at the University of Leicester and past Head of the School of Management, is a leading organisation theorist with particular interests in architecture, space and organisation.

The prestigious prize, which is sponsored by Enterprise Rent-A-Car, aims to recognise outstanding undergraduates studying management or a business related degree. It was one of twelve awarded at the national ‘TARGETjobs Undergraduate of the Year Awards’ ceremony held in Canary Warf.

To be named as ‘Management Undergraduate of the Year’, George had to complete a rigorous series of online tests, application forms, interviews and assessment exercises that mirror a typical graduate recruitment process. As his prize, he will embark upon a ten week summer placement with Enterprise Rent-A-Car including a week in the USA.

George was one of three University of Leicester undergraduates to be shortlisted for an award, alongside Abigail Ackerman from the Department of Physics and Astronomy and Benjamin Wootton from the School of Management. All three were invited to the awards ceremony, where they were able to meet with some of the UK’s top graduate employers.

Secondary school pupils will converge on the University of Leicester on 23 April for the regional stage of a national debating competition.

Debating Matters is a competition which encourages sixth form pupils to think deeply about current social, political and scientific controversies. Pupils are expected to look behind the headlines, to research and argue from competing moral standpoints over the big issues facing society. For the sixth year running, our School of Management is hosting the regional final, which takes place on Tuesday 23 April 2013 and is open to the public.

Six schools from the Midlands have made it through to this stage, which starts in a league format, with each team arguing pro or con two of the following proposals:

We need to build on the green belt

Neuroscience should transform our understanding of criminal responsibility

The UK should leave the European Union

Each debate is scheduled for 70 minutes including grilling from the audience and from a panel of judges which includes our own Professor Jo Brewis.

Then the top two schools go head-to-head in the 80 minute final on the controversial topic: ‘Clinical trials in development countries are exploitative.

The victorious team on Tuesday will win £500 of books from Hodder Education for their school library and will also go forward to the national final, a three day residential event in London at the end of June

Debating Matters is organised by the Institute of Ideas with funding from the Wellcome Trust & Statoil. The regional final on 23 April is an all-day event, kicking off with registration and coffee at 9.30am and running through to half past five. Members of the public are welcome to attend; please contact jasonsmith@instituteofideas.com to reserve a place.

As host, the University of Leicester will of course be impartial; we congratulate all six schools on reaching this stage and may the best team win. But let’s face it, we’re rooting for our local team – go Leicester Grammar!

Stuart Macdonald, visiting professor at the School of Management, has written for the Financial Times on the impact of the Finch Report, published in June 2012.

In his article in the 8 April 2013 edition of the Financial Times, Professor Macdonald looks at the how the Finch Report, a report from the UK government's Working Group on Expanding Access to Published Research Findings, neglects to look at what research will be published and instead focuses on how it will be published.

Research teams from the University of Leicester and the University of Glasgow aim to explore unemployment, insecurity and vulnerability among young people during two key periods of economic instability

A one-year research project in collaboration with the University of Leicester will investigate the experiences of unemployed young people during two of the worst periods for youth unemployment in British history.

The project, entitled ‘The making of the ‘precariat’: unemployment, insecurity and work-poor young adults in harsh economic conditions’ will explore how unemployment, insecurity and vulnerability among 18-25 year-olds has changed between two key periods of economic instability in the UK - the mid-1980’s and 2009-11.

The project is being carried out by research teams from the Centre for Labour Market Studies within the University of Leicester’s School of Management and the School of Education at the University of Glasgow, with funding from the Economic and Social Research Council.

Researchers hope the making of the ‘precariat’ project will enhance our understanding of vulnerable, work-poor, young adults in order to provide new underpinnings for effective youth employment policies.

A marketing expert at the University of Leicester has predicted that water will in the coming century become like petrol- a scarce commodity of huge demand and limited supply

The world faces “a global
crisis in the management of water resources”, a marketing professional has warned on
World Water Day - the annual United Nations event designed to focus attention
on the importance of fresh water.

Dr Georgios Patsiaouras,
Lecturer in Marketing and Consumption at the University of Leicester School of
Management has said we must rethink sustainable water supply networks in order
to prevent unequal access to water between rich and poor.

Dr Patsiaouras’ comments
follow research conducted with two colleagues at the School, Professor Michael
Saren and Professor James Fitchett, on the management of water. Some
preliminary research findings from their study were presented last year at a
leading conference.

The academics argue that in
the coming century, as the global population continues to rise, water demand
will increase, creating competitive tension between firms and nations.
