Institute of Lifelong Learning Admissions Policy

(Extract from the Institute of Lifelong Learning General Regulations for Certificate and Diploma Courses of Higher Education 2008)

5.1  Formal qualifications are not always essential for admission to courses within the Certificate of Higher Education programme.  However, there must be clear evidence that candidates have the potential to complete their chosen course successfully. Normally, admission is EITHER by a relevant qualification at or near to Level 3 of the National Qualifications Framework (e.g., ‘A’ level or BTEC National) OR by other forms of evidence of an equivalent level of general educational competence gained through relevant work or life experience, or through relevant forms of prior learning which may not have been formally accredited (e.g. community-based learning, work-based learning, continuing professional development or voluntary work).  In addition, entrants should be able to demonstrate a genuine interest in their chosen subject and a serious commitment to studying at this level for the duration of the course.  All candidates are required to complete an application form and may also be required to supply references and copies of relevant certificates, to attend for interview, or to submit a sample of written work.  It is normally expected that entrants to the Certificate programme will be able to understand and make use of written material and be able to communicate clearly and accurately in spoken and written English.  (Individual course regulations should be consulted for any course-specific requirements or variations from the above.)

Institute of Lifelong Learning Equal Opportunities Policy

The University's policy in considering applications is to assess the applicant's potential to achieve success as the criterion for selection. Admissions Tutors will therefore consider factors relevant to the applicant's academic aptitude. No applicant will receive less favourable treatment on the grounds of sex, sexual orientation, marital status, religion, social class, age, disability, race, nationality, or ethnic or national origins. Any conditions for entry to a course will only be imposed if justifiable on academic grounds.
