A celebratory event to mark the 150th anniversary of Vaughan College July 2nd – July 3rd 2012

To link with a major international conference in adult education which the University of Leicester is hosting, the Institute of Lifelong Learning is pleased to offer an event to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Vaughan College.

The 24-hour event, three main sessions spread over two days, will look at what Vaughan College has stood for, though will focus on how ‘the Vaughan tradition’ now fits into current thinking, policy and practice. What is the place of adult education in contemporary society?

The event will comprise:

Monday 2nd July - Vaughan College, St. Nicholas Circle, Leicester, LE1 4LB

From 4.30 pm – 8.00 pm

4.30 pm Vaughan College Past and Present: From ‘Self-Improvement’ to ‘Employability’? – Dr Lucy Faire and Dr. Clive Marsh (University of Leicester)

6.00 pm Drinks reception hosted by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester, Professor Sir Robert Burgess

6.30 pm "Why lifelong learning makes us happier, healthier and friendlier: evidence, aspiration and purpose" Lecture by Professor John Field (Professor of Lifelong Learning, University of Stirling)

Tuesday 3rd July -John Foster Hall, Manor Road, Oadby, Leicester, LE2 2LG

9.30 am – 1.30 pm

A seminar with Dr Cheryl Hunt (University of Exeter) on the theme:

'Packaging positive thinking or returning to roots? Adult education and spirituality’

Followed by lunch.

Participation fee

£25 (Monday July 2nd only)
£60 (Monday July 2nd and Tuesday July 3rd; non-residential)

£130 (Monday July 2nd and Tuesday July 3rd, including evening meal and bed and breakfast at John Foster Hall)

Vaughan College 150th Anniversary Celebration

A second event to mark the 150th Anniversary of Vaughan College took place on 24 September 2012 at the College, with an evening of talks, student discussions and a book launch.
