Time Commitment

An 80,000 word PhD or 50,000 word MPhil thesis, a report that includes empirical data and its systematic analysis, will take a considerable amount of time to produce.

If you are studying full-time, we would expect you to be able to dedicate at least three full days each week to the task and if you are part-time, a minimum of two days each week.

It is essential to clear sufficient space in your life if you are to successfully complete this degree.

Registration

• Students are initially registered as Advanced Postgraduate.
• A transfer meeting takes place after 9 months' full-time, or 21 months' part-time, to discuss transfer to PhD (or MPhil).
• Students are expected to complete a PhD thesis within 4 years full-time or 6 years part-time; and MPhil thesis within 2 years full-time or 4 years part-time.
• The thesis should be an original project that develops or extends knowledge of a particular topic.

Attendance in Leicester

All students will be expected to attend social science research methods, regular supervision sessions with an appropriate supervisor, research seminars and tutorial groups.

Course Fees

Students must pay fees, by annual instalments, for each year that they study.

UK/EU Students:

International Students:

• Part-time students: annual instalments of £4,913.5* until the thesis is submitted.
• Full-time students: annual instalments of £9,825*.
