Academic and Professional Requirements

Applicants should normally have a relevant Masters degree from a British university or its equivalent.

Applicants should normally meet the academic and professional requirements required for their specific area of research.

Popular Culture and Spirituality/Religion

  • Applications are welcomed from those with a background - and, ideally, a masters degree - in a branch of theology, religious studies, or the social sciences.
  • Applicants will also need to demonstrate their ability to work on the borderlands between disciplines.

Counselling and Psychotherapy

  • Applicants should normally have a relevant Masters degree from a British university or its equivalent, a qualification in counselling or psychotherapy to at least Diploma level or substantial experience in a related field, and at least three years relevant work experience.
  • Applicants may, in some circumstances, be considered who do not have a Masters Degree, but who have a psychotherapy award from a reputable psychotherapy institute that is approved by UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy), that is not formally validated as a Masters Degree, but that is deemed to be examined at Masters Level.

English Language Competency

Candidates educated outside the UK in countries where English is not the first language must provide evidence, dated within the last three years, that they have sufficient command of both spoken and written English before they can be admitted to their chosen degree programme at the University. Acceptable evidence includes:

  • GCSE/O-level English Language at grade C or above.
  • An overall score of 6.5 in the British Council IELTS test.
  • A score of 600 (250 computer score) in TOEFL, with a score of 4.0 in the Test of Written English (TWE).
  • A score of 90 in the TOEFL internet based test.
