What you will be studying
First year
In addition to a wide-ranging Study Skills module which introduces the themes and disciplines for the degree as a whole, first year modules are likely to include The Urban Experience, European Architecture, Critical Approaches to Texts. Optional modules may include:
- Rome – Epics and History
- The Making of Modern Europe
- Interpreting Popular Culture
- Reformation and Transformation
Second year
To complete the first phase of the degree, likely modules are Religion in the Modern World and Exploring Literature. Optional modules for the second phase of the degree are likely to include:
- Philosophy via Film
- Edwardian Britain
- Mosaics - Manuscripts - Masterpieces
- Myth and Literature
Third year
In the final year you will complete the second phase of your degree, choosing from optional modules such as:
- Ancient Greece – Culture and Drama
- The Medieval World View
- Religion and Civilisation
- The Life and Times of George Orwell
- Key Developments in 20th Century Art and Architecture
- The Pursuit of Liberty: The Development of European Political Thought
- Theatre and Drama in Renaissance England
- Fans - Canons - Scriptures - Cults
- Pre-Raphaelite Art

Teaching, assessment and study support
You will have three hours per week class study. Assessment is carried out mostly through coursework, though there are some short written examinations. It is estimated that you will need to spend between 9 and 12 hours per week on private study. There is also a residential school before Easter each year. Tutors have wide experience in teaching a range of students, particularly adult and part-time learners. Extensive support and guidance is offered throughout your degree programme.
Career relevance and employability
This broad-based BA is proven to build confidence in students as well as enhancing skills. It is an ideal programme for people who want to sharpen their critical and analytical skills for current or future employment. The degree is highly respected and of considerable relevance and use in a wide range of occupations. Our graduates often find that the degree enables them to progress in their current career or to change career direction. A number of students do the BA first before offering to train as teachers. Many students go on to postgraduate study within the University of Leicester or elsewhere.
