FAQ
We understand that you may have certain needs and concerns when considering part-time study. The following section covers the most commonly asked questions. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any further questions.
I’ve never studied at university before. What are the entry requirements?
You don’t always need formal qualifications to begin most of our courses. In many cases, as long as there’s clear evidence that you have the ability and potential to complete your chosen course successfully, all you need is a genuine interest in the subject and a serious commitment to studying at this level.
Our staff will be happy to advise you on any specific requirements for individual courses. Click here for further details of our admissions policy.
I’ve not done any studying for many years. Will I find the course too difficult?
Our students come from a range of backgrounds and have had a variety of educational and work experiences. Our teaching centres provide a range of support services, resources and guidance on study skills. Module tutors are available to support individual students with any academic problems.
What are the different part-time study options available?
• Certificates provide 120 credits at HE Level 1 and normally take 2 years to complete. Certificates of Higher Education are suitable for people who have no prior academic qualifications and are equivalent to the first year of a full-time undergraduate degree. Studying for a certificate can offer an alternative route into studying for the part-time BA (Hons) in Humanities and Arts
• Foundation Degrees offer an alternative route into mainstream higher education and the possibility of progression onto a full honours degree course. Depending on the mode of study, they usually take two to four years to complete.
• Honours Degrees include the BA (Hons) in Humanities and Arts and the BA (Hons) in Counselling. As a progression from a certificate or diploma, and depending on the mode of study, they can take up to 3 years to complete.
(Please note – you should apply for these courses direct, rather than through UCAS.)
What course fees will I have to pay?
Fees for 2012 are to be confirmed. They cover tuition, examination and assessment fees and course materials. For the majority of courses, fees may be paid in three instalments. A first instalment must be paid before the start of your course. Cheques should be made payable to ‘University of Leicester’. It
is also possible to pay course fees of over £20 by credit card.

How do I enrol?
Simply click on the "Request Further Information and Application Pack" link which appears alongside the course you are interested in. They will send you an application form, or tell you if you need to complete your registration online.
What if I have to withdraw or the course is cancelled? Will my fees be refunded?
Courses are subject to minimum student enrolment. The University reserves the right to cancel courses prior to commencement and to move the location of courses without notice. If a course is cancelled prior to starting, your fees will
be refunded in full. If you do not start your course, or decide to withdraw after registration, any refund will be calculated according to the University of Leicester Refund Policy and will depend on whether you are studying on a campus based or distance learning course.
