Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Studies (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)

Applications are being accepted for October 2013 entry.
Course offered subject to minimum enrolment levels.

Course Outline

The Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Studies (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is a continuing professional development programme, which aims to enhance experienced counsellors' theoretical, research- and practice-based knowledge of CBT in order to incorporate it into their own therapeutic work.

The Certificate is open to qualified and experienced counsellors and psychotherapists with considerable training and experience in a modality other than CBT, and with graduate status.

Course Content

  • Module One offers an introduction to the principles and practices of CBT, focusing in particular on its use for treating forms of anxiety and depression, and in working with clients with low self-esteem.
  • Module Two extends students' understanding of CBT principles and practices by exploring the ways in which they can be adapted to fit specific clinical diagnoses. Students are introduced to the DSM-IV diagnostic system, and will also learn about CBT interventions for social phobia and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  • Module Three further extends students' understanding of CBT principles and practice by considering CBT interventions for personality disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. This module also aims to introduce students to recent innovations in CBT theory and practice including the use of imagery and metacognitive interventions.
