Module Aims
- Demonstrate an ability to use psychodynamic theory and the existing professional ethical framework to a formulate client difficulties and make appropriate treatment contracts and to be able to monitor client progress.
By the end of this module, typical students should be able to:
- Use available information including the assessment information; client’s presentation; therapist’s response that clients and quantitative and qualitative measures or assessment tools to make a collaborative decision with clients regarding appropriate therapeutic contracts.
- Devise a strategy for conducting assessment interviews with potential clients.
- Identify and use a comprehensive risk assessment strategy.
- Reflect on and synthesise complex and sometimes contradictory information in order to facilitate an understanding of underlying psychological difficulties.
- Demonstrate awareness of diversity and the rights and responsibilities of all clients regardless of their gender, age, ethnicity, culture, class, and ability. Sexuality, religion and belief.
- Understanding the value base of the profession as exemplified in the BACP ethical framework for good practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy.
- Make critical decisions about ethical issues.
- Make a formulation of the client’s difficulties in psychodynamic terms and an appropriate contract for therapy.
- Negotiate with client’s appropriate and achievable therapeutic goals or outcome and the process by which this can be achieved.
