Entry Requirements

Admissions and Equal Opportunities Policy

The University's policy in considering applications is to assess the applicant's potential to achieve success as the criterion for selection. Admissions Tutors will therefore consider factors relevant to the applicant's academic aptitude.

No applicant will receive less favourable treatment on the grounds of sex, sexual orientation, marital status, religion, social class, age, disability, colour, race, nationality, or ethnic or national origins.

Any conditions for entry to a course will only be imposed if justifiable on academic grounds.

Our courses have specific entry requirements in line with our Selection Policy for Counsellor Training. For further details of academic, clinical and IT requirements, please follow the Entry Requirements link for each course.

Introductory Courses

Our introductory counselling skills course has open entry, for students over the age of 18 years, although we reserve the right to refuse entry if it is considered that the course will be detrimental to an individual or a group.

Certificates

The Certificate course provides an introduction to counselling that attracts a range of students: those who are interested in developing their skills and expertise to use in their current employment; some students take it out of interest; others want to proceed to professional counsellor training. There is a selection procedure for Certificate students, but it is fairly liberal, excluding only students for whom it could potentially be harmful and who are not academically equipped to study at this level.

Foundation Degrees

The Foundation Degree provides a professional training to become a specialist drug and alcohol counsellor. This course sometimes attracts applicants who have had addiction problems themselves in the past. Such applicants are welcome but they must have been free from their addiction for a minimum period of 18 months.

Professional Counsellor Training

Selection for our MA course is more rigorous and relationships with future clients are kept firmly in focus. It should be noted that acceptance on to a Certificate course does not automatically lead to acceptance on to the MA and should not be assumed.

Continuing Professional Development

Our CPD programmes - at HE Level 3 (Bachelors) and Level M (Masters) - are aimed at trained counsellors and therapists, and usually require applicants to have clinical experience as a counsellor.

Research

Our MPhil/PhD programme is aimed at trained, practising counsellors and therapists, or those working in related professions, who are seeking to undertake research in the field of counselling and psychotherapy.
