Entry Requirements
All applications are assessed as a whole—we review your personal statement, references and employment (if appropriate). Overseas students that do not meet our entry requirements may wish to take a Foundation course. The University of Leicester offer pre-university courses at the International Study Centre. We also accept foundation courses from many other institutions.
Entry requirements for our LLB Graduate Entry (Senior Status) degree programme
Important points:
- We accept all recognised A levels – including Law and General Studies.
- If you wish to apply for the LLB Law with French Law and Language (M1R1) or the LLB / Maîtrise double degree (M120), then your offer will include a French language qualification – for example A at A-Level French; 6 in French in the IB; 19.5 in French in the Apolytirion.
- Key / Functional Skills are not included in any offer.
- GCSE English language strongly preferred.
- The Law School welcomes applications from 'mature' students, i.e. students aged 21 or over. Applications will be assessed on their own individual merits, although we will require satisfactory evidence of academic ability and a commitment to study. Mature applicants are occasionally invited for interview before a decision is made
- We do not require the LNAT or LSAT.
- Please note that the School of Law will only consider applications from students wishing to transfer in to the second or third year of our degree programmes in very exceptional circumstances.
- Please note that conditions of the offer will state that the conditions must be completed by the August before you begin your degree programme with us.

If possible please provide us with a scanned copy of your most recent transcript. Please ensure that you include a scan of the institution’s grading information – often found on the reverse of the transcript.
Policy regarding A-level resits
We recognise that for a variety of reasons some students do not achieve their full potential the first time that they take their A-Levels. If you are in the situation where one (or more) of your A Level results was not what you hoped for and you are considering resitting, please note that we require all three A levels results to come from the same academic year, therefore you must resit all three.
English Language qualifications
Applicants whose first language is not English should normally include one of the following in their qualifications:
- GCSE or IGCSE English language at grade B or above
- IELTS score of 7
- TOFEL score of 250 plus TWE at 4.0; or 90 out of 120 in the IBT
- WASSCE (West African Senior School Certificate Examination) O Level English at grade C or above
- The University also accepts a wide range of other English language qualifications. Please contact our Admissions Office for more information (admissions@le.ac.uk)
If you do not meet our English language requirements, then you can bring your English up to the level needed by taking one of our English language preparation programmes at the English Language Teaching Unit. They also offer weekly English language classes that are are focused on legal reading and writing skills for Law students.
