Leicester attracts a burgeoning number of theory doctoral students, including Yavuz Alkan, Henry Jones, Melis Menent, Dave Merritt, and Joe Wills.

Who we are

The Legal, Political & Social Theory Group is a research cluster based in the Leicester Law School. It builds on the successes of the former Legal Theory Discussion Group to support and encourage enthusiasm for the diverse variety of legal, political and social theory research conducted in the School. This currently includes, for example, colleagues working in analytic legal and political philosophy, critical legal theory, socio-legal theory, theories of gender, sexuality and law, and theories of specific bodies of law for example constitutional theory, theories of rights, theories of property and theories of criminal law and punishment.

What we do

The Legal, Political & Social Theory Group runs various group activities, in addition to encouraging a diversity of specialist activities organized by subsets of the group. Our current activities are:

Legal and Political Theory Workshop

These are staff work-in-progress meetings, coordinated by Toni Johnson.

Legal Theory Discussions

This seminar series has run since 2004 and hosts papers by external speakers. Discussions for 2010-11 will include:

  • 1 December 2010 Oran Doyle, (Dublin), ‘The Autonomy of Law’s Empire’, Jan Grodecki Room 5.00-6.00pm.

Author’s Days

These are ‘author-meets-critics’ type events, in which we discuss a book with its author, and are coordinated by Stefano Bertea (stefano.bertea@le.ac.uk) . Discussions for 2010-11 will include:

These are public lectures by external speakers, coordinated by Claire Grant and Philip Cook (Politics). Lectures for 2010-11 will include:

Conferences 

In 2009 colleagues hosted the Critical Legal Conference. In 2011 the Analytic Legal & Political Philosophy Conference will be hosted by Leicester, coordinated by Claire Grant and Philip Cook (Politics).
