Amoebae Laboratory

Welcome

The Amoebae Laboratory at the University of Leicester provides a dedicated, independent service in the evaluation of antimicrobial and therapeutic agents against a range of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, virus and amoebae.

We also specialise in the isolation and identification of pathogenic free-living amoebae such as Naegleria fowleri and Acanthamoeba from water, environmental and clinical samples.

We work with clients from all over the world and have a reputation for the services we provide in the evaluation of contact lens disinfectant solutions against the ocular parasite Acanthamoeba.

We provide services to the eye care, pharmaceutical, healthcare, food and drink, leisure and water hygiene industries.

Services

  • Evaluation of contact lens disinfectant solutions against bacteria, fungi, viruses and Acanthamoeba according to ISO 14729:2001.
  • Evaluation of the encystment inducting ability of contact lens disinfectant solutions on Acanthamoeba trophozoites.
  • Evaluation of disinfectants and therapeutic agents against microorganisms.
  • Evaluation of antimicrobial products and coatings against microorganisms according to ISO 22196:2007/JIS Z 2801:2000.
  • Isolation and identification of Naegleria fowleri and Acanthamoeba spp. from water, environmental and clinical samples.
  • Isolation and identification of Legionella spp. from water samples.
