Course Aims

This degree has been especially designed for students who wish to study both International Relations and History in depth. Students combine modules from the Department of Politics and International Relations with the broad range of History options with an international focus.

Course Structure

First Year

In your first year you take an equal number of modules in International Relations and History. You gain the grounding for your degree by studying core courses in modern international relations and political ideas, in global and modern European history, and in American history.

Second Year

You will again take an equal number of modules in International Relations and History in your second year. You begin to shape your degree to focus on your particular interests by taking four modules from a selection in international relations and politics, and from a wide historical range. You will also study the core history module Perceiving the Past and either Political Analysis if you plan to do your final year dissertation in International Relations, or Historical Research Methods if you plan to do your dissertation in History.

Third Year

In your final year you will further be able to structure your degree to suit your interests, and can choose to either balance your studies equally between International Relations and History, or weight them in favour of one or the other. You will choose four modules from a broad range offered by both departments and write a dissertation on a topic of your choice. You must take at least one additional module in the department in which you are writing your dissertation.
