Course Structure

First Year

In your first year you will be introduced to Making History.  This element of the course equips you with the skills necessary to be an effective and informed History student, and is taught partly in small groups by your personal tutor. You will also study a range of core modules focusing on medieval, early modern, modern and global history, as well as having the opportunity to study an element of history which particularly interests you.

Second Year

During the second year you start to build your degree based on your interests and strengths, beginning to take modules which focus on your preferred aspects of history, as well as developing a greater understanding of important ideas and theories of the discipline. You will work with others on a group research project where you will also enhance and develop your presentation skills, and you will develop greater research skills in the Historical Research Methods module which prepares you for your dissertation. You will also develop your critical analysis skills in the Perceiving the Past module where you will analyse how we understand and interpret the past.

Third Year

In your third year you are able to further tailor your degree and deepen your knowledge and understanding in your chosen areas of specialisation. You will study detailed courses reflecting the particular research strengths of your tutors and will undertake intensive study of original sources or historical data in the Special Subject. You will also carry out independent research to write a dissertation on a topic of your choice.
