Course Aims

The BA Ancient History and History degree enables you to study the classical world alongside the medieval, early modern and modern, and provides you with an understanding of societies and cultures in the past. The degree captures the themes that transcend all ages, such as democracy and empire, and recognises what is constant as well as what changes in the human experience.

Course Structure

First Year

In your first year you will be introduced to Greek and Roman History, as well as essential language training in Latin and Greek, which introduce basic features of the languages as well as the types of documentary sources relevant to ancient history. You will also study core modules in medieval, early modern and global history.

Second Year

In your second year you can begin to tailor your degree towards your own interests. In History, you take three options available from a wide range of modules. You also choose two aspects of Greek and Roman history to study in detail and take a core module focusing in more depth on sources and methods in ancient history. You also have the option study a module on classical and post- classical Latin, which provides you with the opportunity to further develop your language skills.

Third Year

In your final year you can choose to balance your studies equally between Ancient History and History, or weight your studies in favour of your area of interest. You will write a supervised dissertation on a topic of your choice and choose four specialist modules from a wide selection across the two departments.
