Biography

I received my PhD in Social Psychology in 2004 from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Hanover, Germany, and have been since 2005 Lecturer in Holocaust Studies in the School of Historical Studies at the University of Leicester. Since 2009 I have also been the Director of the Stanley Burton Centre for Holocaust and Genocide Studies.  

Research

PhD Supervision

Germany or Britain since 1945; the way of dealing with the past of WWII on the public and private level; relationship between history and memory; National Socialism, fascism, the Holocaust; the prejudices and stereotypes that stem from this history and context and how these survive in multi-cultural societies. 

Currently/Recently Supervised PhD Research Projects

  • Memories of National Socialism, World War II and the Holocaust in Great Britain.
  • The Russian view on the Shoah: Official remembrance versus individual memory of the Holocaust in contemporary Russia.
  • The Holocaust in British Popular Culture: Interpretations of Recent Feature Films

At Undergraduate level I am currently teaching: 

  • Second Year ‘Variety’ Module HS2217 ‘Cultural History: History and Memory’
  • Third Year Special Subject HS3725/26 ‘The Holocaust: Genocide in Europe’ (not running 08/09)
  • Third Year Optional Module HS3648 ‘Public and Private Discourse about the Holocaust in Germany after 1945’ (not running 08/09)
  • Third Year Optional Module ‘The Nazis and Cinema’.

At Postgraduate level I am currently offering:

  • ‘Those Were the Days’ – The Holocaust through the Eyes of Bystanders, Profiteers and Perpetrators

Supervision Undergraduate and MA dissertations

All areas of Holocaust Studies, in particular:

  • The history of the Holocaust/Shoah
  • Nazi perpetrators, collaborators, bystanders
  • Post-war Germany (‘Vergangenheitsbewältigung’) & Britain; the relationship between history and memory; the way of dealing with the past of WWII on the public and private level
  • The Holocaust and its representation in museums, art & film

Administrative Responsibilities

I am currently the Director of the Stanley Burton Centre for Holocaust Studies and am involved in running the centre and planning and organizing lectures, workshops and conferences.
