Biography
I have recently completed my doctorate at the University of Oxford, during which time I spent a semester as a Visiting Scholar at Columbia University, New York. I am a member and former Postgraduate Representative of the Historians of the Twentieth Century United States. Having taught two modules in the School of Historical Studies last semester, I am delighted to be returning to Leicester in the academic year 2011-12 to cover Dr. George Lewis’s research leave.
Research
Themes
My research focuses on the early twentieth century United States and is principally concerned with the intellectual and political histories of the Progressive and New Deal eras, especially elements of continuity in the reform activity between the two periods.
Current Projects
My doctorate examined the social reconstructionists – a group of radical professional educators centred on Teachers College, Columbia University, during the interwar years, who counted the philosopher John Dewey and progressive historian Charles A Beard among their number. I am currently revising parts of the thesis for publication. Future research projects include a study of American progressive intellectuals in China’s Early Republic (1911-1928).
