 Aims

The University of Leicester is a leading centre for research and education in Pain Management, supporting and evaluating new practice initiatives for all registered health care disciplines. It is now the largest provider of taught Postgraduate courses in the UK and we are particularly proud of our record in teaching quality as evidenced by excellent results following the recent Teaching Quality Assessments.

The course has been developed by committed members of a multidisciplinary team, drawn from the University of Leicester and from the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. They are experts in their field and clinically active in Pain Management.

The aim of the course is to create Specialist Practitioners in the field of Pain Management and has been developed specifically to:

  • promote a high level of expertise
  • enable multidisciplinary practice
  • facilitate an evidence-based and academic approach to Pain Management
  • strengthen career advancement opportunities for those with an interest in Pain Management
  • cater for the needs of part-time (2 years) UK and full-time (1 year) overseas students

The programme encompasses the multi-professional learning philosophy of the new NHS and meets the International Association for the Study of Pain recommendation for core curricula in Pain Management.

Course Administration

The Course Director is Professor David Rowbotham, Head of the Division of Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Management, Leicester Medical School and Head of Service, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust Pain Management Service, Director of Research and Development at the University Hospitals of Leicester and he is also the Clinical Director of the LNR-CLRN. The taught elements are held at 22-28 Princess Road West (a site of the University of Leicester).

The first module is a 5-day block providing a firm foundation for the course philosophy of student learning. Thereafter, each module consists of a 2½-day taught element held from Thursday to Saturday lunchtime, followed by a 2-month period of independent study and application to practice in participants' own clinical areas. A personal tutor is allocated for advice and guidance during these times.
