Aims of the Course

The course provides a wide range of approved, accredited M level modules and short courses targeted at the specific needs of post-registration healthcare professionals. Modules focus on clinical, diagnostic and technical skills development whilst also providing an academic underpinning.  The modules aim to provide the educational foundation for advanced/autonomous practice.

Course Administration

The Course Directors are Professor Kamlesh Khunti and Professor Melanie Davies.  The course is overseen by a Panel and Board of Examiners, members of which include all specialists within Diabetes as well as prominent University Academics.  A dedicated and experienced team of academics, clinicians and secretarial staff co-ordinate the course from the University Department of Health Sciences. 

Who Should Attend?

The course is open to professionals with relevant first degrees or professional qualifications, with significant clinical experience in the field.  Candidates with significant experience and/or qualifications in health or social care research practice or management will also be considered and may be assessed through an informal interview process. Under some circumstances a written piece of work may be required to demonstrate an ability to study at the required level. Applicants with accreditations of prior certified learning will be able to transfer up to 40 relevant credits at the discretion of the Course Directors.  The Applicant must advise the course team of any credits they wish to transfer at the application stage.

Short Courses (CPD) Modules

The Diabetes Programme of study supports continuing professional development (CPD) by providing high quality training and transferable skills for healthcare and non healthcare professionals.  Our modules provide a sound clinical grounding with an academic underpinning.

All of the modules can be accessed individually, without enrolling for a higher award.  Students can choose to attend module taught days only and gain a certificate of attendance or go on to obtain the credits associated with the module by successfully completing the module assessments.

Timescales

For part time students the Post Graduate Certificate will be completed in 1 - 2 years, the Post Graduate Diploma in 2 - 4 years and the MSc in Diabetes in 2 - 4 years. Full time students will complete the MSc and Post Graduate Diploma in 1 year. Overseas students can undertake the full MSc only.

Assessment

Most modules and short courses are delivered by consecutive day blocks, with some having a short break in-between. All accredited modules are assessed by a variety of methods, including written examinations, written assignments and oral presentations. Students who register for the Post Graduate Certificate and complete three approved modules will be awarded the Postgraduate Certificate.  Registration for the Post Graduate Diploma and successful completion of six approved modules including a module on research methods will lead to a Postgraduate Diploma.  Students who register for the MSc will be required to complete 3 core modules and 3 optional modules as well as successful completion of a dissertation. Each module is awarded 20 credits at M level and the 12,000–15,000 dissertation 60 credits at M level. 

Fees & Funding 2012/13

 The fees payable for the MSc for the 2012/13 academic year are currently:

  • £14,645 for Full time Overseas students
  • £7,810 for Full Time Home/EU students
  • £3,668 for Part Time Home/EU students (paid twice over two years)

The fees payable for the Post Graduate Diploma for the 2012/13 academic year are currently:

  • £5,206 for Full Time Home/EU students
  • £2,445 for Part Time Home/EU students (paid twice over two years)

The fees payable for the Post Graduate Certificate for the 2012/13 academic year are currently:

  • £2,620 for Full Time Home/EU students
  • £1,320 for Part Time Home/EU students (paid twice over two years)

All of the above fees are subject to change for future academic years. Students registered for a higher award cannot pay per individual module fees.

The fees payable for individual accredited CPD modules for the 2012/13 academic year are currently:

  • £905 for Home/EU students
  • £1,550 for Overseas students per module.

Individual module fees are only available to continuing professional development students i.e. those students not registered for a higher award. All of the above fees are subject to change for future academic years.

Fees & Funding 2013/14

The fees payable for the MSc for the 2013/14 academic year are currently:

  • £15,305 for Full time Overseas students
  • £8,160 for Full Time Home/EU students
  • £4,080 for Part Time Home/EU students (paid twice over two years)

The fees payable for the Post Graduate Diploma for the 2013/14 academic year are currently:

  • £5,440 for Full Time Home/EU students
  • £2,720 for Part Time Home/EU students (paid twice over two years)

The fees payable for the Post Graduate Certificate for the 2013/14 academic year are currently:

  • £2,720 for Full Time Home/EU students
  • £1,360 for Part Time Home/EU students (paid twice over two years)

All of the above fees are subject to change for future academic years. Students registered for a higher award cannot pay per individual module fees.

The fees payable for individual accredited CPD modules for the 2013/14 academic year are currently:

  • £946 for Home/EU students
  • £1,620 for Overseas students per module.

Individual module fees are only available to continuing professional development students i.e. those students not registered for a higher award. All of the above fees are subject to change for future academic years.
