PGR Survey on Joint Internship Programme
De Montfort University and the University of Leicester are jointly organising a PhD Internship Scheme which offers PhD students the opportunity to gain experience working with a local company or public sector organisation. We would be grateful, therefore, if you could answer a short questionnaire on this topic, which should take no more than 5 minutes of your time.

This is an opportunity to learn where those initial career openings may be found along with how applicants can best position themselves to take advantage of those opportunities.
Cafe Research - November 2012
What do Romans, Gamma-rays and E-learning have in common? They are all subjects of our researcher presentations in the November 28 edition of Cafe Research! Come along to Cafe Piazza at 6pm to hear some great talks and network with researchers from across the university. As usual, pizza, wine and soft drinks are provided, but booking is essential.
Mathematics Plus
The latest in our series of Evening Career Events brings together a number of speakers applying their mathematical skills in a range of employment sectors. This event is relevant to all numerate PhDs from mathematics and other numerate fields such as Economics, Physics and Engineering.
Postgraduate Careers Symposium
The 8th annual Postgraduate Careers Symposium for the College of Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology takes place on Wednesday January 9th, 2013. This year's event includes speakers from a wide range of employment sectors, as well as networking opportunities, employability workshops and an exhibition of research funding bodies.
The Effective Part-time Researcher: Effective Part-time Progress
This new one day course is being run by Vitae on Friday 12 October at the University of Nottingham. It is specifically for part-time researchers.
Café Brain - Wednesday 15th August
This is a special edition of Café Research, focussing on neuroscience and psychology. Come along to Café Piazza on the evening of the 15th of August to hear about some of the exciting research being undertaken by PGRs at the University of Leicester. We will have talks from four PGRs, with plenty of opportunity for discussion; drink and pizza will also be provided.
Elee Kirk wins two prizes at regional poster competition
Congratulations to Elee Kirk, PhD student from Museum Studies, who won two prizes at the Vitae Midlands Hub Postgraduate Research Exhibition and Poster Competition. Elee was awarded the third prize overall for her poster, plus the runner-up prize for the written summary that accompanied it.

Doctoral Inaugural Lectures - College of Science and Engineering
Two outstanding doctoral graduates will present their research: Dr Stephen Grebby will talk about "Seeing the geology for the trees: New tools for mapping the Earth’s surface", and Dr Andrea Gumiero will discuss "A glimpse of the invisible: Hydrogen atoms in the chemistry of heme peroxidases". The lectures will take place on Wednesday 20th June, 5.30-6.30pm, in Bennett Lecture Theatre 2.

Biotechnology YES 2012
Biotechnology Young Entrepreneur Scheme (YES) aims to raise awareness of the commercialisation of bioscience research amongst researchers. Participants compete in teams to develop a hypothetical business idea with the help of expert mentors from the biotechnology sector.
