2011

Thursday 16 June 2011

For the seventh successive year the University of Leicester held a one-day exhibition of postgraduate research. This event offered organisations and the general public, as well as the wider academic community, the opportunity to meet the next generation of innovators and cutting-edge researchers. The University of Leicester is one of the UK’s leading research institutions, with a large community of postgraduate researchers working at the forefront of a range of disciplines.

Douglas HallidayOn the day forty-six competitively selected postgraduate researchers presented posters at a public exhibition. The researchers were asked to consider the real world implications of their research and to present it in an engaging and accessible way.

We were pleased to welcome Dr Douglas Halliday to present the keynote speech at the award ceremony.

“This was a fantastic experience for me! Every presenter who I talked with after the event felt the same way. For me, the whole event gave me a great feeling, from the preparation to the received award. But when I faced the public's questions about my research, it really reminded me of the essence of what science is all about: to use our knowledge in order to provide solutions for the people.”

Nikolaos Dietis

"Explaining my work to non-scientific people gave me the chance to look at my work in a very different way. This has helped me by refreshing my ability to see the broader implications/applications, and also how far the projects have evolved since they began. I also feel that I gained knowledge on presenting to different audiences.”
