This Evening Career Event explored a range of career sectors within the public sector, including the civil service. Whilst the event was presented on behalf of the College of Social Sciences and the College of Arts, Humanities & Law it was open to all PhD and postgraduate students from across the University. In addition to speakers who have developed careers in this area we also had a talk from a recent PhD student about her internship experience at Westminster, and how it enabled her to begin a career in the scientific civil service.
Speakers included Simon Eden, Chief Executive of Winchester City Council. Simon entered the Civil Service throught the Fast Stream process, a progressive and feasible route for postgraduate students. He also worked for a number of years on the selection of candidates for Fast Stream entry to the Civil Service.
More locally we also had a talk from Alistair Reed, who is Strategic Director of Leicester City Council.
Our third speaker, Sarah Bell is a current PhD student at the University. Sarah talked about her eight years of experience as a Fast Stream Civil Servant.
The programme of talks began at 6.15pm.
