Graduate Dean in "The Independent" on Supporting Postgraduates

University of Leicester's support for postgraduate students featured in national press.

Following the publication of this year's annual report from the National Student Forum, The Independent newspaper carried a story on support for postgraduate students featuring comments from the University's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bob Burgess, and the Graduate Dean, Prof. Sarah Hainsworth.

The Graduate Dean points out that the Quality and Assurance Agency for Higher Education has set out many of the principles to guide support for postgraduates. The University of Leicester offers a wide range of support for its postgraduate students, from English language training for foreign students, through an annual festival of postgraduate research, to transferable skills training. "What we try to do is equip students to make them employable," said Professor Hainsworth. But what students do for themselves is also important. Science and law postgraduates at the University of Leicester have set-up meeting places (Café Scientific and Café Lexus) which provide not only a chance to meet other students socially, but also develop their networking and presentation skills and share their research with a audience.
