Transfer from Advanced Postgraduate to Named Research Degree
At the start of your degree, you will normally be registered as an Advanced Postgraduate (APG) for your first year if you are a full-time student or for your first two years if you are a part-time or distance learning student. During this period your Department will assess your overall suitability as a research student and, at the end of it, will make a recommendation on the degree for which you should register.

Transfer to Writing-Up Status
You should aim to complete your active research within three years if you are a full-time student or five years if you are a part-time or distance learning student. You should be able to start writing-up your thesis before the end of this time - however, if you need to go into a fourth year – or sixth year if you are a part-time or distance learning student – you may request to register as a writing-up student and pay a reduced fee. Please note that not all research degrees permit a writing-up year and you should contact the Graduate Office for advice if you are unsure.

Request to Continue Full-Time/Part-Time for Final Year
In most cases, you would transfer to writing-up status for your final year - i.e., your fourth year if you studied full-time or your sixth year if your studied part-time. If however you have not completed your active research, you may need to re-register as a full-time or part-time student for all or part of your final year. Please note though that this does not change your expected thesis submission date which remains the final day of your final year.

Extension of Registration
You are expected to submit your thesis within the maximum registration period permitted for your degree – four years for full-time students and six years for part-time students. If you will be unable to complete your thesis by your expected submission date, you will need to request an extension of your registration.

Withdrawal from Studies
If you are considering withdrawing from your studies – i.e., ending your registration – we would encourage you to seek advice from your supervisor. If you decide that you do need to withdraw from your studies, you need to formally notify the Graduate Office.

Change of Mode of Study
In certain cases, students may seek to change their mode of study from full-time to part-time or vice versa. If this is something you hope to do, you must first speak with your supervisor - a change in mode of study is not possible in every case and requires your supervisor's support. Additionally, it can have consequences in terms of when you are expected to submit your thesis and may mean that you have less time to complete your work.

Notification of Change of Address
It is important that you let the Graduate Office know immediately if any of your personal details should change.

Sponsor Details
Students whose fees will be paid by a sponsor (e.g., their employer or government) must provide written confirmation of this before they can register. You are required to submit a completed sponsorship form together with a letter from your sponsor that confirms they will be paying your fees.
