Role of the Graduate School

The Graduate School provides an umbrella structure under which the University's postgraduate community is organised. With nearly half of our students studying at postgraduate level, the Graduate School is central to the University's activities. The Graduate School is charged with:

  • promoting high quality postgraduate education on campus and through distance learning
  • supporting the development of new initiatives including interdisciplinary work
  • disseminating and promoting best practice in all areas of postgraduate education
  • monitoring and reviewing postgraduate programmes to ensure high completion rates for taught and research students
  • ensuring that the University makes adequate provision for postgraduate students in terms of academic and social accommodation

The Graduate School is also responsible for:

  • considering and monitoring bids to the Research Training Innovation Fund - providing financial support to innovations in researcher development training
  • coordinating the University's participation in national surveys - such as the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) and the Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES)
  • promoting and supporting relevant staff development opportunities
  • supporting University, College, and Departmental postgraduate student recruitment activities
