Postgraduate Study and Funding
We currently recruit about ten PhD students per year and these are funded from a variety of scholarships. Together with Home and EU nationals, we recruit PhD students from all over the world. Please view our list of Currently available Studentships and contact the named supervisor if you have further enquiries. Alternatively you could propose your own PhD topic - see our Research Pages to find staff interested in your proposed area of research.
UK and EU Nationals
UK and EU students are eligible for fees and a maintenance award. However, you will need to check your eligibility by looking at the RCUK website.
Details regarding eligibility for NERC projects can be found at:
http;//www.nerc.ac.uk/funding/available/postgrad/eligibility.asp
Non-EU Nationals
Overseas applicants pay the full University tuition fees, as well as their own maintenance and travelling costs. Non-EU students are eligible to apply for the PhD programme but must apply for funding through their home country or through the numerous schemes available to support international students in the UK.
Further information is available through the University of Leicester's International Office. The British Council and The Association of Commonwealth Universities also have further information on various funding schemes for international students wishing to study in the UK.
In addition to RCUK, recent sources of funding for PhDs include:
British Geological Survey
Leicester University Alumni funds
UK Meteorological Office
The World Bank
There are numerous scholarships and funds to help send you on fieldwork or to conferences once you have joined the Geology Department.
