New facilities
After a major refurbishment, the department boasts state of the art teaching areas.
Teaching Laboratories

- Student practical in refurbished Teaching Area 1
Our teaching laboratories and resource room have been extensively refurbished during the last 2 years providing bright new state of the art facilities for study which are a pleasure to work in. The laboratories are used for practical classes and some lectures. They are specifically designed with big tables for group work but are large enough to provide space for independent study. Specimens and maps are easily accessible between practical classes for further study. All the laboratories have wireless internet connections for accessing our extensive online learning resources, making supporting material available during practical classes and afterward.
Sylvester–Bradley Resource Room

- Self study in the Sylvester–Bradley Room
The Sylvester–Bradley Resource Room (named after the first Professor in the department) is used between lectures and practicals by all our students. In many ways it is the focus of the department, where students and staff can meet and talk between lectures and practicals, browse current scientific journals, pursue further study - or just have lunch. Students from all years meet and work together in this room. The room is also used for meetings and students are fully involved in management of the department through representation on the staff-student consultative committee and departmental meetings.
